Expert Advice from wedding guru, Sharon Naylor
Question:
Hi Sharon,
My fiance and I planing a wedding for September 21, 2014 and already overwhelmed. I had no idea what went into planning a wedding and I'm almost tempted to just elope at this point. Our budget is small and we are extremely busy. Where should we begin?
HELP!
Answer:
The start of wedding planning is always overwhelming, which is why I always advise starting off with a 'clear the decks' task: writing down all the things you DON'T want, and thus don't have to spend time and money on. That feels so good! Then, both of you write down your top 5 highest priorities for the day -- food, music, flowers, gown, etc. -- and that's where you'll put extra budget and time.
Then, talk about who is going to be on your team. Will you invite parents to help out? Maybe there are some tasks you can ask if they want to handle, and checking out wedding coordinators lets you enjoy their calming personalities and their tried-and-true organization systems.
Figure out your style now -- do you want formal and elegant, or garden, or rustic, destination with just a small guest list? Destination can be so easy to plan, and they're very common. Resorts' planning teams put your wishes to work and you just show up with your circle of guests to enjoy a stress-free getaway.
One of the things that freaks out newly-engaged couples is diving too often into Pinterest or wedding blogs, where they see too many photos, read about too many conflicting pieces of advice, and it can be very overwhelming.
And plan no-wedding-talk date nights and girls' nights out so that you can decompress and recharge. Don't rush, and use lists to get everything out of your head and onto a screen or paper. Tiny steps, and you'll enjoy the process more!
Good luck! Congratulations!
