Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

Activities

Frommer's Review
The old plantation town of Hanapepe is a great place to stop for lunch and to wander through the shops. Founded by Chinese immigrants who worked in the plantations, Hanapepe is a great look at Kauai's past. While you are there be sure to walk across the suspended old wooden footbridge. Originally built in 1911 and renovated after Hurricane Iniki in 1992, this bridge is a thoroughfare for people living on the other side of the Hanapepe River. The bridge swings, sways, and swoops as you cross from one side to the other. If people are crossing in different directions it becomes a Disneyland-like ride as the bridge bucks and bounces over the swirling muddy water of the river below.
