It is clear that we need to make a fundamental shift in our thinking about our current situation in the world as well as the massive problems that we face with global warming.

Our current linear model is based on growth in the short term. This is where the issue lies. Since the business model they are using is very closely aligned to how they operate today, and in short-term earnings driven by shareholder interests We can't count on that they will change the way they operate. We must shift from mass production towards individual production. This shift can only be made possible through 3D printing, since other manufacturing technologies can be used with the model of mass production.

When I talk about 3D printing's influence on the manufacturing market and its impact on the supply chain I'm often confronted with objections that 3d printing is pretty expensive and slow when compared to conventional manufacturing. For many applications traditional manufacturing is still more efficient and cost-effective than 3D printing. But 3D printing offers two strong advantages: digitization and design. With 3D printing, you can make new shapes and forms which were impossible before. While 3D printing is becoming ever quicker and less expensive. With some printers it is now possible to print a bike frame in just one hour. In this scenario traditional manufacturing isn't as fast. And we need to be aware that the pace of technological advancement is rapid, but we humans think in a linear way. It is not necessary to have a lot of materials, but the right ones. It is crucial to include manufacturing as well as the ecology of our planet.
