Cartagena De Indias Wedding In November
Cartagena   |   November, 2013   |   Attraction

"Friendly Colombian owners Abdul, Karime and Maizza Farah and the Brit of the pack, Helen Pope, work hard to make El Balcon a special home-from-home space to eat, drink and love in Cartagena. This privileged perch provides a bird's eye view of one of Cartagena's most picturesque squares but the familiar team behind this new venture offer more than just a view to keep their keen following coming back for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A well-priced selection of well-travelled dishes and cocktails set to a suitably urbane play-list make this a great option to kick a hangover, kick-back and escape the heat at lunchtime or to kick-start another barmy Cartagena evening. The intimate balcony area that gives the restaurant its name is a wonderful spot to meet new friends and cultures or get closer acquainted with old ones and tune in to the local groove. After you get entrenched in rum-fuelled conversations with your new neighbours, the difficult bit is always leaving so get there early and pick your pew well. For an elegant, inside-outside way around Colombian non-smoking laws nab one of the intimate tables for two that look down on the bar's entrance on Calle Tumbamuertos and connect neatly through a window to El Balcon's creative interiors. The hottest seats for more raucous groups are found at the bar-style tables looking down onto the Plaza San Diego. Both provide world-class people watching vantage points. El Balcon's great range of affordable dishes stretch from a spicy Thai curry to a ceviche with a rocoto kick, creamy hummus and pitta bread to a succulent version of the local staple, La Posta Cartagenera. It's no exaggeration to say that every hour is happy hour at the most happening bar and restaurant in San Diego."

"In Cartagena’s cobblestoned Old Town, El Marqués Hotel still feels like an old colonial home. Ornate wooden balconies look out over courtyards and shaded terraces, rustic beams and polished stone floors set off white walls and bathrooms, and low-slung canvas chairs create quiet nooks under the palms. La Cava, the hotel’s restaurant, is one of the town’s best, with outdoor seating by a fountain and dishes like snapper à la plancha with avocado mousse. Address: 33-41 Santo Domingo Calle, Nuestra Señora del Carmen Cartagena Colombia Phone: 57-5-660-0746"

"Housed in a 17th-century monastery, El Coro bar, at Hotel Sofitel Santa Clara, lures locals and guests alike with pitch-perfect mojitos and the prospect of glimpsing writer and occasional barfly Gabriel García Márquez. Address: 39-29 Torno, Plaza San Diego Cartagena Colombia Phone: 57-5-650-4700"

"We had our rehearsal dinner here. The food was amazing and the price is great but the service was just ok. They were a bit slow with the 3 courses and not very organized. I think if the staff were a bit more organized things would have ran much smoother!"
